Last
month, I was asked to do a review of 5th Grade Math Common Core by Math
Galaxy and I ranked it as one of our top picks. You can check out that
review here. We’ve been using the 5th
grade app at our house since my review, and it’s been nice to have a
resource where my son can go and practice the skills he’s learning on a
daily basis. When the opportunity came up to try out 6th Grade Math
Common Core, I knew I couldn’t pass it up because I’m feeling the
pressure to stay ahead of the game where my kids are concerned.
Let me tell you, I thought 5th grade math was challenging, and it looks like 6th grade is going to be even more so. But 6th Grade Math Common Core has got us covered, with plenty of the common core math concepts outlined neatly so that we can easily find what we need.
The basic topics covered are:
- Ratios & proportions
- Percents
- Fractions
Multi-digit division- Decimal operations
- Factors
- Negative numbers
- Absolute value
- Exponents
- Expressions & equations
- Geometry
- Statistics & Probability
Within each of these categories, your young learner will find an even greater breakdown of the concept into more manageable pieces. Each of these smaller sections offers a brief, easy-to-understand overview of the method for review. Users can then practice the concepts with as many practice questions as they desire. With every correct answer, students can earn points to use in the labyrinth game that is built in.
My
basic testing of this app shows me that it is going to be a valuable
resource for us as we enter our sixth grade year. With my son I find
that he would much rather practice and/or review his homework lessons on
our iPad or computer and I believe this will be one of our go-to tools
next year.
What I liked:
- The overviews offered are in easy-to-follow formats. The simple descriptions get the ideas across without being overwhelming.
- Lots of content – I didn’t find any repetition of problems in my testing.
- Simple-to-use interface
What I liked less:
- My only complaint(s) are the same as what I had on the 5th grade version, that the graphics are a little bit simplistic and/or boring. But this is a math practice app and the appearance doesn’t affect the function at all.
Overall, though, the strengths of this app again far outweigh the weaknesses. I’m giving it 4.5 Stars, making it another Top Pick!
