Previously I have been lucky enough to review Math Galaxy’s Math Common Core apps for the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels, so I was happy to get the chance to review the 4th
grade app also and fill in the gap in my collection. These apps are a
favorite in my house because they give my kids a chance to do
independent practice and review of the skills that they are covering in
their math class at school.
4th Grade Math Common Core has the same look and feel as the previous apps that I reviewed, but of course the topics covered grade specific. The app is separated into several topics and within each of those the topics are broken down into smaller, easy-to-manage sets.
The basic topics covered are:
Numbers in Base 10
- Place value.
- Rounding and estimating.
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers.
Operations & Algebraic Thinking
- Review of Operations
- Multiplicative comparison
- Simple and multi-step word problems
- Learning to represent word problems with equations
- Factors and prime numbers.
Fractions
- Identifying Fractions
- Fractions on a line
- Fractions as part of a group
- Equivalent Fractions
- Comparing Fractions
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying fractions
- Fraction word problems
- Writing decimals
- Drawing decimals on a number line
- Comparing and ordering decimals
- Adding 10ths and 100ths
Measurement
- Conversions
- Length
- Area
- Volume
- Liquid volume
- Line Plots
Geometry
- Measuring angles & angle problems
- Terminology problems
Each category gives young learners the option to review the concept and then to practice their skills with extensive available problems. Along with the reviews and problems, there are also several tutorial videos and games that can help kids with comprehension.
This
app is a bit ahead of where my daughter is right now, but she insisted
on helping me test it out anyway. I don’t know if I cracked her up or
scared her a bit with my exuberance about fractions.
What I liked:
- I love all of the Math Galaxy apps for their ease of use.
- There is extensive content for practice.
- The app is designed so that a child can work independently and easily.
What I liked less:
- If I have to come up with a “complaint” it would be the games. While they certainly get the job done as far as applying the concepts and skills that are being covered, both of my kids found them a little dull.
Overall, this is a comprehensive and easy-to-use app for fourth grade level common core math. This app makes a great supplement to a child’s curriculum at school. I’m giving it 4.5 Stars, making it another Top Pick!
