What is Math Galaxy?

Math Galaxy starts from the beginning, with addition and multiplication tables and single-digit operations, but its main focus is on where children start having trouble with math: multi-step problem-solving. There are enough programs out there that teach number recognition and simple operations, with dancing bears and other frills, but stop short of where students start having trouble, making the leap from familiar and concrete experiences to abstract thinking.

Unlike most math textbooks, which throw a mass of material at the student, Math Galaxy focuses student attention on concepts sequentially and interactively, based upon the ideas behind math manipulatives (such as counting blocks) and connecting new concepts to familiar experiences. Unlike most math software, it goes beyond simple games, low-level operations or rule memorization to link familiar and concrete experiences to higher-level processes. It goes beyond physical math manipulatives by linking each physical operation to its mathematical counterpart at each step, and by allowing manipulations that are difficult to do with physical manipulatives. It stresses concepts that run throughout all of basic math to provide basic understanding rather than memorized rules. Their goal is to provide students a foundation for analytical thinking in the modern world and for higher-level math and science.

The key to learning math is consistency. It is best taken in small doses but done consistently. Even ten minutes or ten problems a day will improve your child's understanding of math if done consistently.

Math Galaxy Whole Numbers Fun is a comprehensive math tutorial that covers all of whole number operations plus Time, Money, and the sections of Length, Area, Volume, Pictographs, Bar Graphs and Probability appropriate for grades 1 to 4.
It also includes the whole number sections of the Word Jumbles, Riddles, and Bridge the Swamp games and the Labyrinth mazes.

Math Galaxy Fractions Fun is a comprehensive fractions tutorial with explanations, practice and games that cover fraction operations and concepts, including equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, reducing fractions, improper fractions, prime factors, greatest common factor, least common multiple, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, word problems, plus geometry, graphs and probability appropriate for grade 5.
It also includes the fraction sections of the Word Jumbles, Riddles, and Bridge the Swamp games and the Labyrinth mazes.

Math Galaxy Decimals, Proportions, % Fun is a comprehensive tutorial for sixth-grade math that is like having an interactive textbook and your own private tutor, with explanations, practice and games that cover decimals, ratios and proportions, and percents concepts and operations, plus geometry, graphs, data analysis and probability appropriate for grade 6.
It also includes the decimal sections of the Word Jumbles, Riddles, and Bridge the Swamp games and the Labyrinth mazes.

Math Galaxy Word Problems Fun provides, in a game setting that's like a cross between monoply and maze searches, a range of problems covering the core of elementary and middle school math: WHOLE NUMBERS, FRACTIONS, DECIMALS, MULTI-STEP PROBLEMS, RATIOS & PROPORTIONS, PERCENTS, NEGATIVE NUMBERS, TIME, LENGTH, AREA, VOLUME, WEIGHT, ANGLES and GRAPHS & TABLES, along with other higher-order skills woven throughout the exercises.

Algebra Fundamentals includes all of the algebra topics, with an unlimited number of problems. It also includes the Labyrinth mazes.

Ok...that is a quick overview of the the wonderful CD-rom's that I received for review. We loved using the Whole Numbers one, the girls giggled at the graphics and I liked the math concepts that were presented in a clear and logical way. There is so much math help on the Math Galaxy website for your child. Although I've shared the CD-rom's for purchase, there are a lot of free games available and the wide variety of worksheets for free as well.
