Multiplying Mixed Numbers This example shows how basic principles carry over from topic to topic. Multiplying mixed numbers follows the same rows by columns representation used in whole numbers. To get everything to a common size, since you have wholes and pieces of different sizes, the 6 1/4 in a row are all converted to 1/4 ths, and the 1 2/3 rows are converted to 1/3 rds, resulting in 5 rows of 25 each. However, these are not rows of wholes but rows of 1/12 ths, since the wholes have been cut 4 ways, then 3 ways. |
