Just as grouping by size will follow the student through addition and subtraction of fractions, decimals, percents, metric and scientific notation, the concept of multiplication as repeated addition spans all of basic math.

This is best grasped in a rows by columns format, where the number of items is shown in each row and the number of rows is the number of times that amount is repeated.

The foundation for this is single-digit multiplication, which the student can practice in order or randomly.
