Fraction Word Problems

The first example shows a fraction word problem in final-answer-only mode, the rest in step-by-step mode. As with whole numbers, in step-by-step mode you can choose the numbers and type of problem: to combine items, find the difference between items, find multiples of an item, or split, cut or share some total.

Like whole numbers, addition and subtraction are generally easier for students. You are adding or subtractions like things, with the same names (e.g., inches + inches) or in the same category (2 apples + 3 oranges = how many fruit?)

More complicated fraction problems also provide practice in an important problem-solving strategy - if you can't solve a problem in its current form, start with a simpler form of it. For example, think how you would solve it with whole numbers and then apply the solution to the fractions.
