Equivalent Fractions With fractions, we continue the theme that runs through all of basic math, that counting is always relative to some unit of measurement. For fractions, the size (# of pieces in a whole) is in the denominator and the number of pieces of that size is in the numerator. Equivalent fractions highlights an operation that is used extensively in algebra and other areas: multiplying or dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number doesn't change its value. In fact, many fraction operations have direct corollaries in algebra. |
